On Non-B, teaching: get new passport outside Thailand - problem?

Featured Replies

I've read all the posts I found related to new passport and "transferring of stamps", but haven't found one that answers:

If I get a new passport while out of Thailand, will I have any problem re-entering Thailand on my same Non-B, with its most recent extension stamp?

My status: Non-B from three years ago, yearly extensions since.

Why new passport? Running out of pages. While still more than a month away from my desired departure from Thailand date (on vacation over the summer break), it appears to be too late to get a new passport here in Thailand at U.S. embassy or consulate before that departure (with an appointment showing not available until about the week I plan to fly out (1st week of April), and then, of course, the 2-week turnaround on the new passport). {Note for those not aware: U.S. no longer gives additional pages; that service ended 31 Dec 2015. You have to get a new passport now. You get a 52-page new one. Fee still $110.}

As an acknowledgement, . . . yes, I acknowledge I should have had better page-management! Should have gone for the new passport earlier. Should have, could have . . "A thousand reasons, not a single excuse."

I have enough pages to take a Re-entry visa stamp, a departure stamp at BKK, an arrival stamp at Tokyo. May even have enough for the entry stamp at BKK when I return. However, if it looks like the latter isn't going to be the case, I will apply for the new passport in Tokyo. I'll be there five weeks, so plenty of time for it. (I have 2 blank pages, which would seem enough, but really it all depends on how the stampers do their stamping. I've had some take up half a page with a space-hogging ill-placement of the stamp.)

<> So, back to the basic question: Anyone foresee any difficulty with my leaving on one passport that has the current stamps (including the re-entry stamp) and returning on a new one?

You must present both passports on return.

After entering the country you must then go to immigration and have the details of the extension of stay transferred to the new passport.

Great. Sounds problem-free (save the problem inherent to another immi office visit! :-)

Thank you for the reply and advice.

Not sure what you were looking at. I just checked the website for appointments available and there are several almost everyday in March for passport services. https://evisaforms.state.gov/acs/default.asp?postcode=BNK&appcode=1

Just looked at US appointment site. 8 available on February 29th. Every day in March is open.

You do realize that japan consulates have same appointment system as in Bangkok and your planew depends on getting one within first week you are in Japan.

You're right. I should have been more clear. I live 140 km from Chiangmai. The consulate there does only Tuesdays and Thursdays, days I simply can't miss at my school. I could do a Monday or a Friday, but not any other, not until the 28th of March, when not only is the semester over, but also our summer course, which picks right up without a break after the semester ends.

The embassy in BKK has more availability, but if I really don't need to make a trip there (eight or nine hours overnight, and then back), I'll spare myself that experience.

If push came to shove and really, really, really had to go to the consulate in Chiagmai on a T / Th, I could force the matter with my school, but it seems pushes and shoves aren't necessary if I'm going to have no trouble coming back on the new passport I can get in Tokyo.

Sorry for not being clear enough. Thank you for your care.

Yes. So, I am going to make the appointment with the embassy in Tokyo as soon as they open up April for appointments. It appears quite doable there. I'll be there from 4 April - 10 May.

Thank you.
