DPM Prawit says Gen Prayut does not aspire to head national strategic panel



BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said today that the next Senate would decide whether General Prayut Chan-ocha, the prime minister and head of the National Council for Peace and Order, or anybody else would head the national strategic committee or not.

He assured that the prime minister would not interfere with the Senate but merely wanted to the strategic plan to be implemented on long-term basis by the governments in the future.

The deputy prime minister said he was not worried that there might be problems during the transition period, pointing out that the government had done its best in the past two years and would keep doing.

Regarding the national strategic committee, he insisted that it was not definite yet that the plan would last up to 20 years. The timeframe is just a broad guideline, he said.

Personally, the deputy prime minister said he felt the national strategic committee was unnecessary during the transition period but the government and the NCPO merely wanted to see the country is in peace so it can move forward.

The next charter will give the Senate and the military veto and weaken the government...

Prayut could decide to become a senator or run for PM. After all, NIDA says he has a 98% approval rating.

Whatever Prayut's options, I doubt he'll stay out of politics. He's enjoyed the political power way too much to become just a retired general.

I have read that Prawit has a larger power base than Prayut. Prayut is part of an insurgent faction of the Army. Not necessarily accepted, but tolerated for its "usefulness" in maintaining the grip of the military.
