Police Raid Re-shutters Cambodian Stores in Thailand

Featured Replies

Khmer Times / Pav Suy

The stores at Rong Kluea Market in Sakaeo province, which borders Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province, have closed once again after a police raid on counterfeit products was conducted yesterday morning, according to reports by a local human rights group.

Sum Chankea, Adhoc coordinator for Banteay Meanchey, said, “The closure of the stores is because the Thai authorities conducted a raid and the Cambodian sellers are fearful of more. There is no official ordering for the closure.”

He added that Thai authorities have made it clear that selling counterfeit brand-name products is strictly prohibited.

Market vendor Thai Seila confirmed the closure, saying, “The vendors here have been forced to close their stores again because the Thai authorities came to the market this morning. We don’t know when we will reopen again. It depends on the actual situation.”
