25th Anniversary of The Kuwait Oil Well Fires

Featured Replies

At the end of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War 732 of Kuwait's 930 oil wells were on fire or blowing out of control, the direct result of sabotage by Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi army. From the end of the conflict and the withdrawal of the Iraqi army in late February 1991 to November 6th when the last well was capped, approximately 2,000,000,000 barrels of crude oil went up in smoke or flowed onto the Kuwaiti desert. The monetary loss to Kuwait and the surrounding region from this destruction and loss of resource was estimated at the time to be over 32 billion dollars. Many experts believed the environmental repercussions of Iraqi's atrocities on Kuwait's oil fields would effect that part of the Middle East for the next 50 years.
