Seven cyclists hurt in kangaroo carcass crash

MELBOURNE: -- A cyclist is in a critical condition and six others are injured after they hit a dead kangaroo and crashed into a car in Australia's Victoria state.

Police said the lead rider in the group of nine dodged the carcass but other cyclists clipped it, then hit an oncoming vehicle.

A man, reportedly in his 50s, was freed from beneath the vehicle.

Only in Australia

There are more Kangaroos in Australia than people. Unfortunately they can bounce out of no where.

Here are the rules:

Do NOT swerve to avoid a collision. Good chance you will end up dead. Hold your line and brake as hard as you can without losing traction.

Pull completely off the road when possible.

Go back and check the condition of the Kangaroo. Staying OFF!! the road and away from traffic.

If the Kangaroo is alive but injured STAY WELL BACK!!! it Will attack you. Kangaroos are a protected species so you are not permitted to euthanase it. Call the Police. Slow any traffic down until the police arrive.

If the Kangaroo is obviously dead, be VERY careful when you approach it. Drag it safely well off the road. If it is a female check the pouch to make sure it is not carrying a young Joey. Females will generally always have a Joey on board. If you find a little Joey remove it from the pouch and wrap it in a towel or jumper and call WIRES they are licensed to care for orphaned native animals.

Obviously the tosser who hit the Roo didn't follow this procedure and many people got hurt unnecessarily. Probably a clueless City Slicker would be my guess.

Always amazes me that people or "tossers" can't, won't or don't read the posts before commenting. They hit a carcass, not a live roo and no-one has died yet except the the roo.

hope for a full and speedy recovery for the critically injured rider.

I think up2u2 is alluding to the fact that it's highly likely someone hit the roo causing its death. ;)
