Ex-kamnan killed in an ambush in Ratchaburi's Ban Kha district

BANGKOK: -- A former kamnan was shot dead and his driver seriously injured in an ambush by gunmen in Ratchaburi’s Ban Kha district late Saturday night.

The dead victim was identified as Mr Somnoek Rompho, 64, former kamnan of Tambon Ban Boeng. He was shot several times by 9-mm and AK47 automatic gunfires and died in his car.

Somnoek’s son, Mr Natthayuth, the incumbent kamnan of Tambon Ban Boeng, miraculously escaped with only slight injury. But the driver, Mr Aek Kongvisetwattana, was seriously injured.

Somnoek’s son-in-law, Mr Nithiwan Sirichanyapong, who was driving in a separate car told the police that the three victims and himself played host to a funeral ceremony held at a temple in Ban Poobon.

After the funeral, they drove home in two cars. But as they passed through Pong Krathing intersection, a pick-up truck drove alongside Mr Somnoek’s car and men on the truck opened up with AK47 assault rifle and 9-mm pistols.

Mr Nithiwan further said the gunmen’s truck drove away for a short distance and then returned to fire upon the victims’ car once again. He added that he fired back at the gunmen forcing them to make a retreat toward Ban Kha district.

Police suspected business conflict as the cause of the shooting. They said Somnoek and Natthayuth took part with forest and military officials in recent raids of illegal resorts in Ban Kha district.

He obviously upset someone.

He obviously upset someone.

yes, no doubt the owners of the illegal resorts.

Jungle business rules.

This is the tip of an iceberg - in many other countries it would be a real tempter for investigative journalists and criminal investigators to look further into. Here - no. risks too great, rewards too little. No one will thank you (unless with a bullet from an AK47) for uncovering the pile of stinking manure that is resort building and forest encroachment. Way too many fat fingers in that pie.

....never enough.....

...and as for all those 'gun control campaigns'.....................................'Yeah, right"......

these Kamnan's are dropping like flies lately. How many have been murdered in the last few months?

They are obviously involved in some shady dealings.

Or perhaps someone is consolidating their turf?

Live by the sword....

The Thai system of settling business disputes. Seems

a bit rough, but save on court time.... One of the many

reasons I never wanted to be in business in Thailand...

There is NO investigative journalism in Thailand.

You either get sued in court under the charge of

defamation even though what was published was

true. Or you get a bullet to the head. Thus there is

no real news in Thailand, which is exactly what the

elites want in order to keep looting the country..
