Child labor allegations may have been inaccurate and misleading: Ministry of Labor

BANGKOK, 5 April 2016 (NNT) – Ministry of Labor spokesman Theeraphol Khunmuang said allegations pertaining to child labor may have been inaccurate and misleading.

For example, he said, an online media agency presented a message saying that the Ministry of Labor has prohibited children aged under 15 years from helping their parents with domestic chores.

The Ministry of Labor has already investigated a case and found out that such information was inaccurate as it merely intended to ban the hiring of any children aged under 15 years at all workplaces.

The Ministry of Labor insisted that children of all ages can help their parents with domestic chores with respect to the long-established Thai culture.

Thanks for clarifying this. Since most parents have their kids helping in their businesses anyway. What they need to do is be more specific in this. Like, not allowing the kids to operate equipment that could cause injury to a child. Like gas cooking stove and mixers and other possibly dangerous equipment. They should also not be allowed to help their family business alone. Parental supervision should be mandatory if they are helping. It's a big difference helping someone and doing it alone. Parents should be made aware of that difference and it should be deterred.

No doubt 15 year olds across the country wept tears of joy at this news.

Well tears anyway.

Pathetic statement from a govt. official. Shame shame shame.coffee1.gif

More stupid Thai exceptionalism. Because children of all ages don't help their parents with domestic chores in any other nation or culture... coffee1.gif

OR... they may have been accurate and concise.

In/around our village only the girls "help" the exalted males sit and watch... usually/basically.

...but foreign husbands can't help their Thai wives in their private business without a work permit, with respect to the long-established arbitrary Thai bureaucracy.

Another attempt to whitewash wrongdoings by declaring them as part of what they think is "culture".

Well, it already worked for corruption...

If these guys want to get the figures right, they should have a look at some areas in Bangkok where under aged work in the sweatshops stitching cloth and shoes and "help" their parents selling street food for 10 hours a day.

Why does Thai Forum continue to publish such irrelavent crap? Surely whoever edits this forum has some knowledge of the media world. Likewise the football results. We get inundated from many sources of this now Thai forum has decided to add to it.

I don't know what mudhole you were brought up in but as kids we certainly helped our parents, mowing lawns, making our own beds, drying dishes, putting out the milk bottles (it was a long time ago), bringing in the newpaper etc., etc. I was brought up in an old fashioned country with values, NZ.

Amen brother, it is like they are too lazy to ferret out real news, opting instead to cut and paste soccer stories that have zero to do with Thailand and are available in spades on all sports and news sources where soccer is relevant.

Think link below is an interesting report from the US concerning child labor in Thailand in 2014.

Yeah better to get rid of the sunday edition all together.

We do need a break from TV, that for sure.

Apologies for my error in not using the sarcasm font.

Yep. Daft. I wonder how many of us would set up businesses with their wife if they could work in it. I would. But Thailand doesn't want innovation and entrepreneurs - that might bring competition, productivity, quality concepts and value for money. Heaven forbid.

Nope you were brought up in a time when children were brought up by their parents, rather than by computer games, androids and social media.
