I would like to setup a little voting on the topic:

How are you guys prefer to book a scooter/motorbike in Thailand?

Please choose the right answer for you:

1 - you rent motorbike directly in the rental office when you arrived?

2 - you rent motorbike via hotel reception when you arrived?

3 - you rent a motorbike beforehand using online services (rental offices websites)

3.1 - are you using advance payment for the booking?

Please share your experience. Any comments about your choice will be highly appreciated.

I want to use that info in my article about Thailand.

1 normally but 2 if the hotel is a better deal.

I usually stay guesthouses and they can do better deals.

just need to use basis, easier than to commit in advance for something.

usually local prices beat net rentals, true for cars too.

Didn't know you could/not necessary.

Why don't you ask one of the moderators to make this a poll?

I prefer option 2, saves me the hassle of passport hand over/refusal/questions etc. It is a bit more expensive though.

The best is to rent directly with the rental office. I was in Bangkok and I found the company http://rentascooterbangkok.com, it's a french team. They are friendly and helpful, good scooter and cheap, I recommend this company. Easy to find because they are in Sukhumvit 26.
