Private sector creates E-Manual to aid in fight against IUU fishing

BANGKOK, 27 April 2016 (NNT) – The private sector has affirmed its readiness to work with the government to end illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) with plans to create an E-Manual on the marine animal trading to be put into effect this May 1.

The Fish Marketing Organization, Thai Fishing Federation and the Thai Fisheries Association have joined hands to create an electronic manual dubbed the E- Marine Catch Purchasing Document (E-MCPD) to enhance fishing and seafood standards. The manual will also allow for back checks on fishing to ensure that they conform to the Fishing Act of 2015.

The manual will be available via an application named FMO E-MCPD.

Vice Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce Poj Aramwattananont stated that the manual should be considered an important driver for stricter inspection of fishing practices. The guide is to be put into effect this May 1 at all Fish Marketing Organization harbors, standardizing all information relevant to fisheries. It is planned that the manual’s control will extend to 22 seaside provinces in support of the government’s work to end IUU fishing and lift a yellow card on Thailand’s fisheries from the European Union.

How gracious of them to affirm their readiness.
