NGO Trainer Arrested for Bag Snatching

Khmer Times/Srey Kumneth

A trainer at an NGO was arrested by police over the weekend for snatching an expatriate’s bag in Phnom Penh’s Prek Thmey commune, after the victim chased down the suspect on a moto-taxi, according to police. According to the National Police website, 23-year-old Yim Samyo El from Chbar Ampov’s Veal Sbov commune, who works with the French-run Friends International in Phnom Penh, grabbed 26-year-old nurse Cheun Meale’s purse while she was riding on the back of a moto-taxi in Prek Thmey commune.

Rather than accept the robbery as an annoyance, Ms. Meale ordered her moto-taxi driver to give chase, pursuing Mr. Samyo’s moto while she called police. In his haste to escape, Mr. Samyo El crashed his bike and was apprehended by police. “Fortunately, there was a car driving behind them and the driver helped chase the suspect until the suspect’s motorbike crashed and he was arrested immediately,” the police website said.

Pen Sokhum, manager of the Program Association of Saving Life at Friends International, told Khmer Times that Mr. Samyo El had been using drugs since 2014-2015 and he had recently been released from prison, with the NGO training him to teach music in an effort to rehabilitate him.
