Yes, it is a lineated barbet.

The translation of the Thai name is the common barbet which shows that it is widespread and numerous here.

Outside of decent forest, they are only one of two species of barbet you are likely to see. Where are you?

Georgeous bird.

Sorry to divert a bit but the subject of birds reminded me of a question I've long wanted to ask. When I lived in Isarn, I often used to hear a call with a haunting quality, like a bass flute, kind of long, usually in the mornings. I assumed Morning Dove but I never saw one. Any learned opinions?

I've never heard it in Bangkok.

Thanks Briggsy.

I am on the outskirts of Phitsanulok.

The birds are a pair,in a tree in just outside my back door.

I will try and get a better photo tomorrow, they go as soon as they see movement,so will have try remote control.

Lineated Barbet, I usually see the bird when I do my bird watching in Bangkok. Bangkok is amazing for bird watchers

dddave, search for Asian Koel on youtube, might be the bird you're looking for. You can hear them everywhere. Black but easy to recognise (If you're lucky to see them) by their red eyes. Not sure about the "Haunting" call, but give it a trylineated_barbet.jpg

Asian Koel, I don't know how to put a sound file here but I have a picture

Thank you. I did as you suggested and actually, the Asian Koel is a bird I do hear every day in Bangkok...unceasingly from 6am to 8am daily in a tree outside my balcony.

The call I was seeking is much lower and softer. I did a bit more Googling and do believe it was a Morning Dove.
