Thailand celebrates Reserve Forces Day

BANGKOK, 5 May 2016 (NNT) - The Royal Thai Army has been accelerating the development of reserve personnel’s capabilities in national defense and public service, as Thailand celebrates Reserves Forces Day.

The RTA today holds a parade showcasing the capabilities of 688 reserve personnel working alongside the 11th Infantry Division in conducting military operations. The event this year also unveiled a mobile application that facilitates the public service work of military cadets.

Reserve Forces Day is held each year to commemorate the graciousness of King Rama VI, who founded the country’s boy scouts movement in 1911 which led to the establishment of reserve forces. Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan chaired the Reserve Forces Day celebration along with Commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army Gen Teerachai Narkvanich and Lt Gen Werachai Indusobhana, Commanding General of the Territorial Defense Command.

All the pomp and military circumstance, mandatory service for males, uniforms plastered with medals, ribbons and trinkets, hundreds of Generals, ....All when Thailand never fought in a single war in the modern era. Country pride in what? Playing (military) games to impress the local population?

Don't you think it is a good thing that Thailand has never had to fight a war?

That is, apart from the border incursion from Vietnamese and Cambodian troops from 1979 to 1987. Some of those engagements were very serious. Artillery , tanks and planes with hundreds of casualties on both sides.

But don't let a lack of knowledge stop you from commenting!

.....Yes, very serious. Almost like WWW 1 and 2 where hundreds of thousands died so we can freely admire the Thai Army who collaborated Japan enemy in WWW 2.

Irrelevant, but to redress the balance, Thailand sent troops to Korea, Vietnam and Lao to aid the Americans in their little adventures in S.E. Asia!

Personally I think that it is a very good thing that Thailand has not had to fight a major war.

I somehow don't think that it is a reflection or result of their military, with its ludicrously bloated "headshed" element, liberal sprinkling of military bling, and its legions of ill trained and poorly equipped conscripts.

Britain did, in Korea unfortunately.
