Drought prompts durian prices to increase this year

PHAYAO, 9 May 2016 (NNT)-Durians remain a sought after item among fruit lovers even as drought continues to ravage many parts of the country. Many people are willing to pay more for the King of Fruits which can cost up to 120 baht per kilogram.

In Phayao Province on the weekend, people were waiting in line to buy durians which were loaded into a pickup truck and brought to Phayao municipality from Chantaburi Province. Even though the fruit is sold at higher prices this year, people’s craving for durians has never waned.

Mr. Thanet Cheaujing, a durian vendor, said people continued to visit his pickup truck to buy durians which were being sold at 100-120 baht per kilogram. He attributed higher durian prices to water shortages and overseas demand for Thai durians. People said they had to buy durians now while they were still affordable. The longer they wait, the higher the prices for these fruits.

Drought causes durian prices UP.

Not interested the smell is enough to put off anybody wanting to eat it.

Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

I enjoy durian, but I would never pay that price, best thing to do is to leave it there and let it rot.

So a fruit that smells like bad feet is now more expensive? Hmmmm I think I can cope with the loss of not eating it.

I like Durian, just make sure it is properly ripe, the best species and slightly chilled.

I would buy it at 500b KG

My wife is very upset about the price hike. The smell doesn't bother me, and I have tried it, but it's definitely not on my list of favorite fruit.

Get planting guys !

Last year they costed 20.000 baht a piece !! for the best ones of Nonthaburi. Wonder how much this year.

Oh and before you guys start....look here:

Durian was never cheap at the start of the season, and taking inflation into account it can't be cheaper than in previous years. The price will drop if people don't buy it, nevertheless it seems the purchasing power of people is strong enough to keep the prices high for durian.

Just spent a week in Trat, Chanthaburi and Rayong provinces. Go around this time every year but I've never seen as many roadside places selling durian as on this trip. The ones we had were very tasty!

No water, Make them into chips.

The drought is not only causing the price of durian to rise but the price of most fruits,

Mangos and melons are smaller at this time of year also which means that the price per kg is higher.

The same applies to vegetables where the price is higher as well.
