Police say explosion at Hua Lampong railway station is a bottle bomb

BANGKOK: -- Police said today that the bomb explosion at Hua Lampong railway terminal was a bottle bomb which was abandoned by someone.

The bottle bomb went off after a man picked it up and used it as an ashtray without knowing what was inside the bottle. Two people were slightly injured.

Pol Col Kamthorn Ouicharoen, the superintendent of the police explosives ordance disposal unit, said today that it was lucky the bottle cap was removed otherwise the blast would have been more powerful and more people might get hurted.

He said that the bottle bomb which contained gun powder could be easily made and was popular among rival vocational students or political protesters. He suspected that the bottle bomb in question was discarded by someone who was afraid that he might get caught by the police or who didn’t want to use it.

State Railway of Thailand governor Wutthichart Kalyanamitr assured that the SRT had its own security measure in place at Hua Lampong railway station to ensure safety for passengers.

Yup, everything's safe as houses, nothing to see here!

Yes, good job that the bottle cap was removed.

Wait a minute though - if it hadn't been removed then the bottle couldn't have been used as an ashtray in the first place and wouldn't have exploded anyway. Duh!

Finally, it is not declared as "Beer poped opened with a loud bang!" gigglem.gif

"...SRT had its own security measure in place at Hua Lampong railway station to ensure safety for passengers...".

If so, where were they on this occasion (or, do they only emerge after an event)?

Stuck on a train waiting outside the station for a platform to become vacant?

I'm waiting to hear what the next instalment is. The police, to date, do not seem to be able to work out what the device actually was, this is about the third guess.

Thank god, I am not the only one!

I was thinking, I missed something, was reading the OP again and again...

So...someone made a bomb...that only turned into a bomb, because someone eventually used it as an ashtray...

What kind of moronic bomb- plan is that?

And it would have been more powerful, with a closed lid...and then ...what?

This makes no sense...but it is Friday and I will not hurt my head over this!

Is it happy hour, yet?

Just as well there are no terrorists in country.

....less and less clear information with each progressive post....

Yep, now the bottle contained 'gunpowder' a.k.a Black Powder.

"State Railway of Thailand governor Wutthichart Kalyanamitr assured that the SRT had its own security measure in place at Hua Lampong railway station to ensure safety for passengers."

Yet a bottle-bomb can be left lying around, to be picked up and used as ashtray, to say the least. Your 'own security measure... to ensure safety for passengers."???

You really are taking us for idiots, aren't you?

In all fairness, if I saw a small glass bottle full of powder laying around, especially in the garbage, I wouldn't suspect any foul play.

I've got dozens of them in my kitchen alone. Pepper, cinnamon, 5-spice, oregano, and on and on. Buy it in bulk and transfer it to an empty coffee bottle. Nothing suspicious about that.

Holy beer, is it??? clap2.gif
