UDD demands charter court to rule on the constitutionality of Section 61 of referendum law

BANGKOK: -- The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) has asked the Constitutional Court to rule within seven days whether paragraph two of Section 61 of the Referendum Act is unconstitutional or not.

UDD chairman Jatuporn Promphan said Monday that the UDD also wanted all agencies concerned with the referendum to put off their activities pertaining to the referendum until there is a ruling from the Constitutional Court otherwise all the expenses paid will be a complete waste.

If the court’s ruling comes a few days ahead of the referendum, Jatuporn pointed out that the expenses paid to arrange for the referendum which may amount to several billions baht would be a waste.

He noted that since the Constitutional Court was quick in delivering a ruling resulting to the dissolution of the Palang Prachachon party, it should be able to do the same regarding Section 61 of the Referendum Act.

“Don’t let the country pays the fees for holding the referendum if the Constitutional Court rules after August 7 that Section 61 is unconstitutional,” said jatuporn.

Regarding widespread criticisms against the UDD’s plan to set up an anti-graft centre to watch out for suspected irregularities in the referendum, the UDD leader insisted that the centre was intended to ensure transparency in the referendum.

He said that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha should have thanked the UDD for its initiative to form the anti-graft centre instead of bashing at them.

Things would not have become as they are today, if only this same action was performed on that Amnesty Bill...

But but but... Thaksin.

Boring.

So the non elected non democratic mysteriously financed self appointed UDD leaders demand a court does something.

Still at least they're not throwing shit, contaminated blood, grenades, bombs, or burning coffins this time. Or threatening the judges to be careful of the consequences when making a decision - rather than actually rule in accordance with the law.

What an intelligent post. Let's pretend Thaksin doesn't exist or use the same old line over and over to muffle any comment against the Shin clan.

Perhaps you think a group of self appointed leaders calling themselves democratic is democracy.

Yes, they would. There is no way the old elite would have allowed anyone else to be in control during the upcoming transition. Edited by MZurf

Same old line? Action speaks louder than words. And such a selective action points towards hypocrisy.

Seems reasonable given the Ombudsman has asked the Court to rule. I mean, rule of law and all that stuff.

But then the Junta Huggers probably prefer to have the Court issue a finding on 8 August?

Thailand’s Office of the Ombudsman has concluded that the Referendum Act might be unconstitutional as its ambiguity allows the authorities to clamp down on the draft charter critics.
Raksagecha Chaechai, Secretary-General of the Office of the Ombudsman, on Wednesday, 1 June 2016, announced that the Ombudsman’s Office will submit a request to the Constitutional Court to rule whether the 2016 Referendum Act is unconstitutional or not.
He said that Ombudsman’s Office has concluded that Article 61 of the Referendum Act allows the authorities to suppress critics of the junta-sponsored draft constitution because it is written ambiguously.

They are probably wearing red underwear.

Considering that bill never was active, there was no need for any court to rule it unconstitutional....

Funny you should say this, as if a bill that was rejected by the senate would really be a reason for the coup.

Only to be replaced by a much further reaching amnesty bill, that only benefits the coup mongers...

Or in other words, the situation has turned much, much worse.

The UDD is an organization, as such there are no elections needed, and as an organization, or as any normal citizens they do have the right to question this particular bill, anyone should as this bill hampers debate and freedom of speech.

As to non elected, non democratic, self appointed leaders, look no further then the current government. And they make the laws ! Do you ever think before you post I wonder. Where I come from, your post is called, ' not so smart' and that's putting it mildly.

Even with perfect government, Yingluck wouldn t be in power today as the Junta is clearly in favor of traditionnal establishment and ...

Remember the Amnesty Bill granted by the Junta for the Junta? I don t see you speak too much about this one Dude

Yeah it is much better to have a Junta granting self Amnesty, lowering confidence in investment to the point of having the lowest growth in Asean, nailing the coffin as now the investors will not come back. It is a democratic Junta, right?, with all the freedom of press, freedom of speech...a Junta which tackle efficiently graft, corruption, handle very well the image of Thailand abroad and is clearly not leaded by a "jai Lon, Jai Dam" self appointed PM

I don't think their funding is mysterious. Neither is the Junta's, they just take Tax payer money, no mandate needed, just a few guns and tanks.

Why not vote to see if people want to vote. If the voters know they have a choice to vote or not to vote. Maybe they will choose, not to vote.

Can Thai visa Members vote on this important subject. Vote or not to vote, that is the question. I vote not to vote on this vote sublect.

It is a waste of my one vote. or not ? Can we vote for Trump / Then maybe I would use my one Thai vote to vote for Trump.

Vote now, please.

And perhaps you think Prayuth is doing a terrific job.

I use the same mockery line over and over because the Thaksin-haters use the same BS over and over. If you don't like being laughed at, try to appear more intelligent.

That might work.
