are you surprised? when Mandela died I mentioned it to a Thai teacher (Masters Degree in English) who said "who's he"?

they simply know very, very little outside of their 'bubble' and they are trained to stay that way

Most Thai would not even be able to find their country on a World Atlas.

When I was teaching Business English to mature age students, 20-35, I asked then if they had a choice where to live, apart from Thailand. The majority chose Switzerland .So pointing to the world map on my wall I asked them to show me where it was located. Not one had a clue.Outside of their own country the knowledge is abysmal, they don't even know the capital cities of neighboring countries.

Asians do NOT look all the same to me. Neither should others to Thais.

Unfortunately (for me), I have to see people frequently before I recognise them. I've been embarrassed a few times when a Thai recognises me, and therefore talks to me, when out and about - and I don't have the faintest idea who they are....

I'm always amazed that they recognise me, and certainly don't expect it, assuming I'm just another 'farang' to all the Thais with whom I don't frequently associate.

The most suprising was yesterday when out walking the dogs. I heard one Thai say to another my home location - which took me by suprise as I didn't recognise him!

Mind you, I'm nearly as bad with Westerners - I might recognise the face, but that about it unless I see them frequently sad.png .

To be fair to thai people, how many Americans could pick Tanakorn Posayanon, Wanchana Sawatdee, or Jesdaporn Pholdee out of a lineup. But if one of these people died tomorrow it would be headlines for days here. There is no doubt that thailand is a very insular country but so is America. How many Americans could even recognise Ho Chi Minh, Chairman Mao or Pol Pot (then again how many thais could LOL).

True enough that the majority of Americans would not able to recognize the Thais you mention, but I'm confident that even the most amateur N.A. news sources would be able to research the person well enough to display the correct picture. This OP was about an embarrassing blunder by a (creditable?) national news source -- not about who people of different countries can recognize.

A two second Google in the news backroom would have shown a zillion photos of the guy...rolleyes.gif

As for the "funny" comment, if it were YOUR dead famous father would it still be funny..?

He was just a brain damaged boxer few had heard of in Thailand, not a world leader or great scientist. At least Ali had a sense of humor, when he could still laugh.

Boxing is the human equivalent of cock fighting : damaging each other for money

What is all the fuss about this guy who violently damaged the brains of others before becoming brain damaged himself ?

Ali was the greatest, yet Thai tv insults his memory by showing another mans photo !!DISGUSTING !!

Get over it. It was a mistake.

Why do farangs think their world should be so important in Asia?

Morgan Freeman gets mistaken for Samuel Jackson in his own bloody country, but you find the Thais DISGUSTING?

How many Muay Thai champs can you name and recognize from the sixties and seventies?

The Thai graphics bloke at the TV station probably wasn't even born when Ali was fighting.

You live in Thailand but can you name who is considered the greatest ever Muay Thai fighter? (Aussie Jeff Fenech beat him once, but only in a boxing match, not Muay Thai.)

For me Muay Thai is much more exciting to watch that heavyweights slugging it out and I would think most Thais feel the same way.

Last Sunday night Buakao destroyed a Chinese bloke in two minutes. Buakao didn't even raise a sweat or have a hair out of place. The Chinese bloke just gave up.

Big news for Thailand, but not even mentioned on Thai-visa. Is that DISGUSTING to you also?

A few here are saying the Thais don't know anything outside of Thailand. Many say the same about the USA. IMO it is because they both have so much going on in their own countries. There is only so much you can take in. The Thais are also at a disadvantage language wise. Both countries believe that their countries are the best in the world. Both have valid reasons.

RIP Ali.

I blame Thaksin, he's always behind everything, we all know it, or at least some people like to claim he is.whistling.gif

Actually, in a way he is responsible. He came to office with a powerful mandate and the chance to reform education. Yet in his first 3 years in power, he had 5 education ministers, including himself. So yes, blame Thaksin - one of a long line of failed and should-be-pilloried-and-reviled education ministers.

Take a look at the Government budget and the percentage allocated to education. Then tell me what's happening. This isn't a Thaksin thing..., it's been going on a long time. Ineptitude fosters ineptitude. Check out a few school (and uni) libraries and my point may be better received.

Nah, they can not even do it with their own people

He was another deluded Muslim who said in his last interview that Islam had did not kill innocent people, pretty stupid comment for a 'genius'.

Not at all. Islam never killed anyonw. People who claim to believe in Islam have though. Same as people who claim to be Christian, or Hindu or Sikh - and even Buddhist.

People kill people. Ideals and principles don't.

Its not the same at all.

Humans CHOOSE to box, whereas cocks are put in rings to fight. They have no choice.

I have zero interest in boxing, but I loved my dad (who had previously been a boxer, and thought it was great), so I watched Ali matches with him and as a kid, enjoyed it.

I've grown up since.

Yes, Exactly !!!...In general Thais know nothing of the rest of the world Nothing at all.....but almost everything about Thailand !!!

Just a few years ago I told to a Thai that I just came back from a trip to Vietnam, he asked me why I went to a dangerous country ?

I said why dangerous ? he said about the war !! ...what war ? I replied ! he thought there still was a war in Vietnam !?!?!

I swear it's true and this is just a example of the many stories about the Thai knowledge of the rest of the world !!!

Best regards.

I'm amazed that everybody here is shocked that Thais don't know Muhammad Ali. They also don't know who Hitler, Ghandi, Mother Teresa, The Pope or Mussolini is/was! Ali was a boxer, and Muay Thai is the sport of Thailand, not boxing. Most westerners have not heard of Baukaw or Senchai or Thaksin. Why is everybody so shocked and insulted?

I always admired Ali, he was one of the very few braggarts that could actually deliver on his braggadocio.

Then I moved to Thailand.

I showed him my book and he saw there were no pictures in it !! he said "Puat Hua " Head ace !!! ...........that's all........I never saw a Thai really read a book, except for comics or stupid magazines with lots of pictures..!!!
