เอารัดเอาเปรียบ

Is the รัด in the above word meaning to bind, to tighten ?

Is there any difference between เอารัดเอาเปรียบ and เอาเปรียบ ?

Thank you

รัด in this case would be a word fragment because เอารัดเอาเปรียบ is a single word. Though รัด does mean to bind in itself, it has no bearing in this case. It would be like taking 'rag' out of 'fragment' and trying to make it relate to the word.

I understand what you say but there must be a source to this เอารัด because I can't find any other word using รัด and does not have the meaning of Bind.

Thanks

This is an example of an "elaborate expression." Thai is full of them.

Here, เอาเปรียบ is the normal phrase, while เอารัดเอาเปรียบ is the elaborate version.

To quote from the intro of Mary Haas' dictionary:

"[Elaborate expressions] are expanded by repeating a part of the compound and adding a new part, by inserting a syllable for the sake of rhyme, or by inserting a syllable which has some vague semantic relation to the original parts. Most of these expressions are made up of four parts. The semirepeated expressions have the same item as the first and third or or as the second and fourth part."

In this case, I'd say รัด is a word with a vague semantic relation. Since it means bind or tight, or also to rush or hurry someone, it gives the association of being put in a tight spot. Again, though, it's often only a very vague association (or also sometimes entirely unrelated).

Other examples of similar constructions:

ลืมหูลืมตา means the same thing as ลืมตา, but หู and ตา are a semantic pair.

หมดเนื้อหมดตัว means the same thing as หมดตัว, but เนื้อ and ตัว are semantically connected.

ดีอกดีใจ means the same as ดีใจ, but อก and ใจ have a pretty obvious semantic connection.

Etc, etc. There are tons more like this. (Not to mention rhyming elaborate expressions.)
