Hello,

Enjoy reading your forum. I am a 45 year old American living and working in Seattle. I'm married to a 26 year old Filipina.

As an alternative to retiring in Philippines, we are contemplating Chang Mai.

I understand that once I turn 50 and put a certain amount of money into a Thai bank, I can obtain a permanent retirement visa in Thailand. How does this work for my wife? She'll only be 31 years old at the time of my retirement? My question is that if one spouse qualifies, does the other as well?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Better ask this on the visa sub-forum. It would seem to me that yes, if you're legally married then she would be able to get a visa based on your retirement status. It works that way for work visas anyway, support you're American and work legally in Thailand then you can bring the family, never mind their age or if they work or not.

(It's funny living in Chiang Mai with a Philippina by the way, as everyone assumes she's Thai. It's even funnier when you have to translate for her. )

Cheers,

Chanchao

Before October 1 of this year, your wife would not have qualified for a dependent visa based on your retirement visa. As a result of a rule change that took effect on October 1, however, she now would. This is covered somewhere in the visa sub-forum, but I can vouch for it personally. I got a retirement visa five months ago and on October 2 my wife, who is 39, was able to get a dependent visa at the Chiangmai immigration office. It was their first case under the new rules, so it took a little while, but it was basically very straightforward and easy.

Of course your wife can receive a dependent visa and as far as I know that has always been the case. The effective paragraph on the immigration website (which is not new) is:

In cases of having dependents (husband / wife, children), the applicant must provide evidence indicating their relationship. Evidence must be translated into Thai and be certified by the embassy or consulate of the non-Thai citizens.

Some couples requested retirement visa for each party, which can be done but requires each qualify.

The retirement requirement is currently 800k baht in Thai bank account or 65k pension or a combination and must be extended each year. This can be pre approved in the US with the money still in the US if you wish.

As noted above, it has been the case for spouses of holders of retirement visas only since the beginning of last month.
