Dhammakaya followers seek clarifications from DSI on insurrection case

BANGKOK: -- A group of followers of Wat Dhammakaya and their legal advisors on Tuesday sought clarification from the Department of Special Investigation about the progress of the insurrection case against Phra Buddha Isara and Mr Paibul Nititawan.

They questioned why Mr Paibul, a member of the National Reform Assembly and a vocal critic against Phra Dhammachayo and Wat Dhammakaya was not held in custody and demanded to know whether the defamation charge filed against Mr Ong-art Thamnitha, spokesman of the followers, by Phra Buddha Isara was substantiated or not.

However, none of them were present when DSI officials made verbal clarifications.

Pol Lt-Col Cholapat Pansakul, deputy director of the Special Crime Cases Operations Centre, explained that the DSI’s enquiry officers had already submitted the insurrection case in May last year to the public prosecutors with the recommendation that 51 suspects, including Mr Paibul and Mr Suthep Thuagsuban, former leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, should be prosecuted.

The case is now pending with the public prosecutors and both Mr Suthep and Mr Paibul is freed on bail, said the DSI officer, adding that the public prosecutors had asked the DSI enquiry officers to question more witnesses regarding the charge of aiding insurrection against Mr Paibul.

Meanwhile DSI deputy director-general Pol Lt-Col Somboon Sarasith gave assurance that the money laundering charge against Phra Dhammachayo was a different case from the one in which the embattled abbot was questioned as a witness when his name appeared in a list of recipients who received donations from Klongchan Credit Union Cooperatives.

The money laundering case concerns the donated money received by Phra Dhammachayo which was used for purpose which was deemed unlawful, said Pol Lt-Col Somboon.
