Austria: Constitutional Court rules fresh presidential run-off vote must be held

Austria’s Constitutional Court has ruled that the presidential run-off election must be held again.

Anti-immigration Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer was narrowly defeated by former Greens leader Alexander Van der Bellen in the May 22 vote.

One percentage point separated the pair, with the balance tipped in Van der Bellen’s favour by postal ballots.

With the result annulled, Hofer will now have another chance to become the European Union’s first far-right head of state.

The court said it was applying its strict standard on the use of election rules. It ruled there were official grounds to invalidate the vote in the interests of the public and democracy.

Witnesses report irregularities in the way the count was carried out, which included the processing of postal votes sooner than they should have been.

A fresh vote is expected to be held in the autumn.

So, the fix was in. Another example of how democracy works in Europe.

One of the EU Presidents already said that they would not recognise the result if the Right Wing candidate won the election.

I will try and find the link to it.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz has issued an official warning against Austria if it dares to elect the Freedom Party’s (FPÖ) Norbert Hofer on May 22.

It had been proven, that there had been some "formal" irregularities unsure and it is to doubt if they changed the outcome,

but they happened and so - new election! Good! thumbsup.gif

I did not read, that Mr. Schulz, would not recognize the outcome, but said - “Europe’s character will be changed if the extremist right wins the elections in Austria.”

He, in my opinion, shall shut the f..k up! tongue.png

Hofer is leading in all polls. The Austrian elite have panicked and are desperately trying to call of the october election. Their favorite candidate van der Bellen has already stopped campaigning in the hope that his masters will indeed call of or delay the election. Their xcuse for cancelling the election is that the ballot papers have poor quality glue for the envelopes. A lame excuse if ever there was one!

The mind boggles as to what excuses the French will come up when their runoff is between LePen and Sarkozy, given Sarkozy's latest revelation.

Sarkozy told Le Journal du Dimanche: “Every Frenchman suspected of being linked to terrorism, because he regularly consults a jihadist website, or his behaviour shows signs of radicalisation or because he is in close contact with radicalised people, must by preventively placed in a detention centre.”

It is now official.

The referendum has now been postponed until December due to faulty glue for postal ballots.

Problem with glue used on ballot papers means contest is delayed until 4 December, exacerbating country’s political uncertainty

It will be interesting to hear what excuses are trotted out when Hofer wins in December.
