Police Deflated after Suspect’s Escape

Featured Replies

A manhunt is underway for the leader of a gang, which killed a man during a brazen armed robbery in April, after the ringleader managed to escape from police custody thanks to a flat tire. The man, who was arrested on Thursday, escaped on Saturday when the police car taking him to collect evidence got a flat tire in Kampong Speu province’s Oral district, according to police.

District deputy police chief Prak Moul said Toek Sam Ol, 32, was arrested on Thursday and initially cooperated with police, leading them to other gang members, Yim Vuthy, 37, Phy Yoeun, 35, and Chhay Thoeun, 45, on Saturday. “We made three arrests. First, we arrested and got the answers from the first ringleader to arrest the second. The first arrest was the ringleader, Toek Sam Ol. The second arrest was not related to the robbery in Oral district, but they carried weapons in a bag in Tbong Khmum. The third is the three accomplices in the Oral robbery,” he said.

On April 15, armed with AK-47s and a pistol, the four men robbed 40-year-old Ty Choeun’s shop in Kampong Speu province’s Oral district. Mr. Choeun was shot three times when he called out for help and later died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
