very important issue for Thais to contemplate for long time

Thais don't contemplate *anything" from long time. Their somtam perhaps, or their bank balance.

Or a new iPhone to wave in front of their friends.

Considering the scandal-wracked state of Thai Buddhism today, one can understand why worshippers chose to dig so deeply into the past as well as their pockets to find a worthy subject for their devotion.

I do love when expats say 'Buddhism' is a not a religion. He wasn't a god. Well, there are no such things as gods (Cantona excluded).

What there is though - is many people worshiping a person, people or a thing in the hope of getting money, power, good next life, etc in return.

We really are a selfish, ignorant self-indulged species.
