Malaysia, south Thailand to address issue on Malaysian couples marrying in Thailand

KANGAR: The number of Malaysian couples going to South Thailand to marry is not serious, but a mechanism has to be worked out to ensure the marriage is legally valid, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom (pic).

He said a marriage that is not legally recognised could create problems, especially for the wife and children.

As such, he said, a mechanism would be worked out with the five Andaman regions in South Thailand, namely Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Songkhla on matters pertaining to marriage and divorce of Malaysian couples who went there to marry.

I probably don't get it.

What is the problem here?

and "a marriage that is not legally recognised could create problems, especially for the wife and children"

from the OP.

Otherwise, it's a great idea, all good for tourism ! thumbsup.gif

maybe it's the issue of the bumiputera couples coming in, and it turned out the new hubby already has 3 wives, and it gets complicated...

Why do Malaysian couples go to south Thailand to marry? (Apart from the gross Malaysian food compared to the fantastic cuisine of the south)

In some cases it's because one of the couple is not Muslim and it's a more simple process for them to 'quickly covert' and then marry than it is in Malaysia. Your comment on the food is a bit baffling........the Malay food in Malaysia is similar to the Malay food in southern Thailand, and added to that you also have Indian food and Chinese food to choose from.........Thai too if you look hard enough. Perhaps you need to try a few more restaurants...............

Malaysian men go over and marry a local girl even though they are already married in Malaysia, 2nd wife. When they bring the new wife back the marriage is not officially recognised which causes a whole bunch of problems, with immigration and the religious authorities. Funny enough the first wife doesn't have much say in it...

almost, but not quite right in parts...

The First wife has to first give him permission to take on a 2nd or subsequent wife - and yes, to not get that done, causes problems

To be permitted to officially take on multiple wives, he has to prove that he is financially capable of supporting all of them

If one of them is not muslim, it won't be recognised anyway, and they run the risk of the kalwat squad taking them both away

The multiple wives thing only applies to couples who are both muslim

Most of them don't ask the first wife's permission and southern Thailand has a lot single beautiful Muslim women. The old fellas come over and can't help themselves, getting married stops them from committing khalwat

I had a distant Christian Friend who married a Malaysian Women in Malaysia and he had to get the whole family permission first, even though his future wife was in her late 20's, and then also convert into becoming a Muslim in front of a lot of witnesses in the mosque. He was then expected to pray 5 times a day and attend the mosque at least weekly.

It just seems to me it would have been easier if he came to Thailand and just got married here instead and if he could. He later went to work in Saudi Arabia, where I met him, and since he had changed his religion to Muslim, which he had to declare on his Visa, he was bothered to go to prayer call their to. So much so he finally just left with his wife. Mind you this was 20 years ago.

There is also probably not as much hassle booking a hotel room with your Malaysian Girlfriend in Thailand. I doubt you would even be able to do that with a Single Muslim Woman in Malaysian. Or at least legally. I hear they are really fussy about doing that sort of thing. Probably a law.

Maybe Southern Thailand has Elvis Wedding Chapels, a la Las Vegas.

In theory but not in practise. The older worn out wife will do as she is told. The man will do as he wants.
