I believe I will need a Certificate of No Criminal Record as part of thevisa applocation process (for a non-imm O - is this right ?)

Where / how do I get one as the CRB will not issue to individuals

Thanks

You'll have to apply to the local constabulary where you last lived in the UK.

The Criminal report is needed only if you are applying for a "O-A" visa. It is obtained in your home country.

I'm pretty sure CRB are required by the data Protection Act to provide you with a copy if you apply in writing - takes 6-8 weeks.

Incidentally a British friend applied for his retirement visa 2 months ago and they never asked him for this - just proof of funds in his account.

I do not believe that he applied for a retirement O-A visa in his home country and received it without a police check. Either he applied for extension of stay inside Thailand on the basis of retirement (where no police check is required) or a normal non immigrant O visa in his home country that allows 90 day stays which he can extend in Thailand later.

I have been talking to quite a few english gentlemen today and they assured me that all the criminals were sent to the colonies many years ago, and england is now crime free :o:D:D:D:D

You're right - on their website the CRB say they do not issue to individuals, only to prospective employers registered with them in the UK. http://www.crb.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=381

I got a form from the local Constabulary where I last lived, sent them a cheque for 10 pounds, and got back, very quickly, a letter confirming that a local county police records search was clear. Later (but within 40 days, as they promise) I received a letter from New Scotland Yard saying that the Police National Computer held no record of me.

I've had these certified at the Embassy, and am intending to submit them as part of a permanent residence application. However, I'm not sure they will be acceptable as they did not require fingerprints for the search, only a copy of my birth certificate. If Immigration ask me to do a fingerprint check, I've absolutely no idea how to do it.

My apologies _ I should have been more specific. He applied here in Thailand, converting a tourist visa to extention of stay based on retirement. This seems to be an easier process than obtaining the Criminal Record check!

If someone wants a Uk criminal check they could also approach an umbrella organisation- see: www.disclosures.co.uk
