BANGKOK: The official World Tourism Day 2016 celebrations will still be held in Bangkok on September 27 despite the latest spate of bombing and arson attacks in seven southern provinces, according to United Nations World Tourism Organisation secretary-general Taleb D. Rifai.

In a message to the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports in aftermath of the violent incidents in southern Thailand during August 11-13, Mr Rifai said Thailand remains an important destination for tourists from all over the world and he is confident that Thailand will continue to be a tourist destination that people of the world will visit.

Meanwhile, World Travel and Tourism Council president and CEO David Scowsill said he had talked with Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul about the security measures being implemented by the Thai government after the attacks and was confident that the situation would quickly return to normal.

He noted that although Thailand was rocked by several bomb explosions in August last year, tourist arrivals in Thailand have increased 20 percent to over 30 million this year while tourist spendings have also increased by 25 percent.

Minister Kobkarn said she would discuss with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about inviting envoys from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Hong Kong for a briefing of the latest situation and the safety measures introduced by the government in the aftermath of the bombing attacks.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yutthasak Supasorn said TAT would step up campaign to promote short-haul tourism market in case long-haul tourism market is still worried with safety concern.

The annual Jazz musical festival will continue to be held in Hua Hin this year to showcase that the situation has returned to normal, he said, adding that

expatriates in Thailand will be asked to help spread the words to their peoples abroad the situation in Thailand.

Tourist police commander Pol Maj-Gen Surachet Hakparn said an addition of 800 tourist police would be deployed to tourist provinces to ensure better security for tourists on top of some 900 men already based there.

Possibly in the worst taste of any post on TVF since the demise of English John.

Outstanding!

Probably true, but the attitude of the powers that be seems to indicate they will carry on regardless, as if nothing has happened and all is back to normal.

Of course -

1. They have absolutely no idea what to do

 2. There is no cash in it for them.

 3. If they do catch anyone and it turns out to be linked to the south, or anyone other than a redshirt,  it destroys any number of   narratives -  we,re winning in the south, insurgency in decline, everyone in the Army is solidly behind the junta, and so on.

....universal accessibility....

...what genius came up with that....

...of course they accept all currencies...

...how about some universal human rights for the hapless saps that get taken in here...then kicked to the curb...or worse..

.....pay...and you get in....pay more...you can stay longer....

The "situation"...as in...How easy it is to obtain a visa if they want to stay longer?  How they are treated equally and never charged higher prices than Thais are charged? How their education and talents are appreciated and easily can get jobs teaching English since the Thai teachers are not equipped to teach it as well? How their business acumen is welcome to help Thais learn successful business practices in order to raise their economic standard of living? How there is no corruption in tourist destinations and they can always expect courteous and professional service from tuk tuk/taxi drivers, Jet Ski and Motor Bike operators?

Yes, I am sure the word will be spread.

We all may end up eating our words if the figures from the Stock Exchange of Thailand are anything to go by.

This morning the SET is showing that Thai investors are not overly concerned by the weekend bombings. After an expected shaky start at opening, they are proving quite resilient, having the SET (at the close of the morning session) up 5.31points above its closing value last Thursday.

By comparison, the day after the Erawan bombing last year, the SET fell 36.13 points, and then a further 64.55 points a few days later!

Yes i agree. I must admit im a bit surprised. The SET Index is raised 1.1% in a few hours. So the world don't see any problem. The bath is up 0.2% btw :)

What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing it seems. Even the GDP Gross domestic product rose 3.5% year-on-year in the second quarter this year, compared with 3.2% in the first quarter, with growth in the first half of 2016 at 3.4%, so maybe this is a part of it about SET index is up;)

Like everything else in the world today this is the new normal. The onus is on you to make the right decisions on where to go and what to attend. They are not going to hold your hand they only want to hold your wallet. They are just another founding member of the world wide "Greed Club"

The set is quite a bargain actually when compared to the US exchanges. Here you can buy shares in good companies for $10 or less in the US you have such insane prices like close to $1,000 a share for Amazon and Google. Chipotles has fallen from a high of $700 a share to $400 quite a kick in the arse. There is more value here on the SET than the S&P the Dow or the Nasdaq. As previously discussed Thailand is listed one of the least worst economies in the world the key words being "least worst" or new normal.
