Three Brothers Convicted of Murder

Featured Replies

Three brothers were yesterday convicted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and sentenced from 10 to 13 years each in prison for their involvement in the murder of a 31-year-old man in the capital’s Russey Keo district in February.  The killing happened in front of the Sach Aing Kilometer Lex 6 restaurant off National Road 5 in Krorl Kor village in Russey Keo’s Kilometre Lex 6 commune on February 16 at about 11:45pm.

Hin Chanthon, 28, and Hin Chanthin, 23, were both sentenced to 10 years in prison and Hin Chanthuon, 18, who stabbed the victim with a sword, was sentenced to 13 years, according to presiding judge Im Vannak.    “The court ordered them to jointly pay a total of 10 million riel [about $2,500] to the victim’s family,” he said.

He added that they were charged with “intentional murder” under article 199 of the Criminal Code and were arrested shortly after midnight after killing Khath Sopheaktra, a cook at the restaurant. Russey Keo district police chief Colonel Teang Chansar said the suspects and the victim were from the same village and a few days before the murder, the victim had been in an argument with Mr. Chanthuon, the youngest brother.
