Heather Reid has been appointed the new Australian Honorary Consul resident in Koh Samui, with jurisdiction throughout Surat Thani.

KOH SAMUI: -- The Australian Government has appointed Heather Reid as its new Honorary Consul resident in Koh Samui, with jurisdiction throughout Surat Thani.

Nearly nine hundred thousand Australians visit Thailand every year with many holidaying in Koh Samui and the surrounding islands,” said a release from the Australian Embassy in Bangkok.

“Ms Reid’s appointment will help the Australian Government to continue delivering high-quality consular services to Australians in Koh Samui and the province of Surat Thani,” the release said.

Australia and Thailand have a strong relationship based on shared interests and strong people-to-people links. The two countries work closely together in regional and international forums, and on a range of important issues including defence, law enforcement, counter-terrorism, and combating people smuggling and human trafficking.

Good luck Heather! :wai:

WHY ?

Hon Consuls used to be able to sign/stamp and verify documents such as Australian Marriage Certificates..

NOT ANY MORE !

Now under the latest Regulations (3,000572, 222)...changeable every 5 minutes... It MUST be done by the Australian EMBASSY either in BKK, or on an "Outreach" Visit to wherever YOU may be. (Oh, and the cost is Baht770)

This being the case, what is the point in having an Hon. Consul anywhere in this country?

To help with all the issues that arise with their citizens.  Which are many.  Best of luck to her!
