Embassy Rescues Cambodian Fishermen in Thailand

The Cambodian embassy in Thailand is urging Thai authorities to release 18 Cambodian fishermen, believed to be victims of human trafficking, who were detained for working on Thai fishing vessels, a Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said. According to Friday’s statement, Cheam Lamatin, the counselor in charge of migrant labor at the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok, said that the 18 fishermen had been forced to work for no pay on Thai fishing boats over the past few months.
 

“During the visit, the embassy found that all the Cambodian workers did not receive their daily wages while they were forced to work on Thai fishing boats,” the statement read, adding that the visit took place on September 16. He added that after the embassy’s intervention, Thai authorities agreed to take legal steps to ensure the boat owners paid the Cambodians the wages they were owed.
 

Meanwhile, another Cambodian migrant worker, Bun La, was being held in a Thai prison over his alleged involvement in drug trafficking in the Narathiwat province. “Mr. La was accused of smuggling 300 methamphetamine pills and he is now being taken to jail in Thailand,” the statement read.
