As floodwater rises high in her hometown in Ayutthaya’s Bang Ban district, a local farmer rows her boat into her farm yesterday to collect bananas before they are swamped. The Chao Phraya River has overflown in this province.

BANGKOK: -- FLOODING this year will be under control and won’t get as out of hand like in 2011, officials from the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) said yesterday.

The RID also said over 750,000 rai of paddy fields would not be harvested until the end of next month, so many water-retention basins would not be available until then. Meanwhile, large areas of rice fields have already been submerged and the crop damaged in many Central provinces.

What has been done since the big floodings of 2011? And is it working well now? Who's responsible for that?

Well the current government of course is responsible for the situation now. The ones who blame the government of the day for the flooding in 2011.

Well they are at least partially responsible they have been in power for quite a while now and if they did not check the projects that were done to prevent flooding. Initiated during YL her reign then that is negligence. YL can be held responsible if many of her projects were not completed or had a lot of corruption in it.

But however you look at it they should have checked those flood projects and started working on them right away. (guess nobody worried as there was a drought)

I'm pretty sure that the previous government can be blamed for just about anything; I'm being totally serious by the way.

The current "government" cannot be held responsible for anything because they are good people working on a 20 year plan to clean up the messes that "populist politicians" made since 2001.

When will you get off this merry-go-round on blaming anyone for acts of nature?  If it rains a lot or there are significant storms, there will be floods.  The events that coalesced in 2011 resulted in a flood that exceeded all prior records in the Choaphaya river basin.  It exceeded a '100 year' flood event. No politician or expert could have prevented the floods or foresaw the events that converged.

No country, city, state, or province has preparations or can mitigate a '100 year' flood event. It would be uneconomical and unrealistic.  I don't blame the junta for the current floods but study and preparation can always be better in retrospect.  I feel sorry for the farmers who have lost their crops and for people who have lost personal property and livelihoods. Whether or not I like any politician or the junta, the Thai people need aid and support in time of need.  Assessing blame for natural disasters serves no useful purpose.

What politicians or military persons in power must remember is that they do not know or can reliably predict future events.  Don't give people false hope.

When will you go off your merry go round of trying to remove all blame from people. Are you sure you are not a Thai.

We are in this topic talking about the floods of this year not the 2011 ones. You are right nobody prepares for a 100 year flood event that is economical not viable.

You can blame people for not maintaining dams (was a nice article about a dam in Ayuttaya that was not maintained). You can blame people for the corruption in the managing of flood defenses. That is what you can and should do, these things make flooding worse then it should be. That is what I blame them for.. not for the rainfal. I only blame them how they manage it and how they check stuff before and how they maintain and upgrade the dams and dykes. and retention basins.

When I come across an article of how bad a dam / dyke in Ayuttaya was maintained I do blame those who are responsible for it because it would make floods worse then they should be.

I wont mind if anybody quotes this! "They don't have a bloody clue!" prepare for the drought!!!
