SAMUT SONGKHRAM: -- The mass death of fish in cage farming and of stingrays in the Mae Klong river in Samut Songkhram province has prompted an official investigation into the cause and find those who are responsible.

The investigation team led by Samut Sakhon governor and director of the Veterinary Medical Aquatic Animal Research Center (VMAARC) – Chulalongkorn University inspected the river and some fish cage farms along the river yesterday and tested the quality of the water.

After the inspection, the governor Mr Kamchatka Tansatien disclosed that it was likely that the mass death of fish in cage farming and the death of several stingrays in the river was from water pollution.

He said  the water test showed that the biochemical oxygen demand or BOD quantity in the river is low and below standard.

There was also chemical substance in the water which might be the cause of pollution, he said.

Meanwhile officials from the VMAARC also collected samples of the dead stingray which was not discarded due to its big size  for laboratory test.

In the United Kingdom, this fish type is oftern referred to as a skate. a cartilaginous fish that makes good eating (wings) fried with chips.

Salt and vinegar please.

I am no chemist but maybe the toxins were run off from excessive spraying of fruit and vegetables and/or rice.

Excessive use of anti-mosquitoes sprays, runoff...

Fish die from shrinkage of brain cells

Zika blamed...

Thailands rivers might be poisoned?

With such excellent enviromental- laws in place?

Who'd have thunk?!

Everything you can put down the drain at your home or at any factory could have killed these fish. All the plastics you see crumbling over time in the sunlight end up in the rivers and seas. Anything that is manmade ends up in the sea. Ultimately, all these skates will be gone along with most everything. They are all going to die because humans are the most important thing on this earth so have more babies and enjoy the die off as a family. You must be joking if you think anything else is possible. The natural world is dying fast.

with all the rain and water flowing I doubt lack of oxygen more then likely chemical substances without a doubt ! toxic ones at that !!!!!!

My Thai friends told me not to swim in the rivers or the ocean and that if you want to swim in Thailand you should swim in swimming pools. Stupid as I was I didn't listen to them and got chemical burns after a swim in the Ping river, a month and 4 visits to the hospital later my skin was back to normal.

I think the owners of the sugar processing plant should sue the dead fish for defamation, along with whoever is publishing these photos.

This actually is nothing like a Skate or Thornback or Common Ray that you get in UK waters. You are right though about the eating of the wings. Old fishing tales where I come from says it's bad luck to bring the head and tail etc back to land and should be disposed of at sea. I've caught many and great eating . These are a completly different fish !

My guess is a large hog operation had its dyke fail allowing the highly toxic hog waste to flow into the river. I saw this happen back home and it killed all the fish for about fifty kilos of river. Millions of fish.

Have you tried taking prozac?
