Two days after Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti the scale of the disaster is only just emerging.

At least 800 people are reported dead.

The country, on the western part of the island of Hispaniola, is already wracked by poverty and the UN says some 350,000 are now in dire need as a result of the storm.

In Jeremie what little the residents had has been claimed by the wild winds and rain:“Matthew ravaged everything in the way including our houses. We are all sheltering now. We have nothing left. Our personal things, documents birth certificates, all gone. We sleep on the streets with our children and no one has come to help until now. We have nothing.’‘

The Red Cross has launched an appeal to raise $6.9m to provide medical assistance, shelter and water and sanitation to 50,000 people in south western Haiti.
