BANGKOK:-- Visitors to Bangkok may sleep at the Royal Parade grounds, said the Phra Nakorn authority responsible for the area.

The announcement of the special dispensation for Sanam Luang follows a video clip that was posted online of a Phuket man being asked to leave the area.

The actions of two "Thesakit" or local officials caused an argument to break out.

The area is usually off limits to the public from 10pm to 5am. But local chief Somchai Traipithayakun said that people could sleep there during the ceremonies that would be taking place at the adjoining Grand Palace.

He said that toilets had been set up but he warned members of the public to take care of their valuables as they might be vulnerable to thieves in the area.

Thai Rath reporters had gone to the scene where they met Sarot Chumpet who had travelled from Phuket when he heard of the death of His Majesty. He was the man featured in the controversial video.

He said that he had bought food and drink for other people staying at Sanam Luang and was only trying to do good for the benefit of others when he was asked to leave the area.

Phra Nakorn chief Somchai said that the matter was "a misunderstanding" and that people were welcome to use Sanam Luang for now.
