Authorities assist mourners traveling to Grand Palace

Kitti Cheevasittiyanon

BANGKOK, 23 October 2016 (NNT) - Authorities have been working around the clock to ensure orderliness around Sanam Luang as mourners have continued visiting the Grand Palace to pay respects to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The government-appointed safety command center has deployed military and police officers as well as officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to facilitate the arrival of mourners, who have been taking free public transport services to reach the Grand Palace.

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority has stationed buses and shuttle services at eight selected locations around the perimeter of the capital city to take people to the old quarter of Bangkok.

The BMTA has also asked passenger van services, which bring in mourners from other provinces to drop their passengers off at designated spots to avoid causing further traffic congestion, while suggesting those traveling from the Thonburi area take boats and ferries instead of buses or other land transportation.

In addition, more than 20 private hospitals have sent some 200 medical doctors and nurses to be stationed around the Sanam Luang area to help those in need.

The center said that there will be a regular assessment of the conditions around the area while more roads may be closed to facilitate the arrival of mourners.
