Kingdom’s First National Games Set to Begin

Featured Replies

With interest in sport at a high following the recent exploits of the Cambodian National football team and Rio Olympic athletes, two government bodies are hoping to boost interest and help aid the development of budding athletes with Cambodia’s first National Games. Beginning today and running for 11 days – between October 25 and November 5 – the inaugural National Games have been organized by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

Speaking in a press conference last week, secretary of state at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport Sean Borat said he hoped to see Cambodians turn out in numbers to support their athletes. “We will open the National Stadium to let people come to watch the National Games. Our stadium can hold 50,000 to 60,000 people, so please all people come to visit during the opening ceremony day [October 28] and on the closing ceremony day [November 5].”

“We have 2,700 athletes and delegates and 548 technical officials. There are 15 sports with 189 categories,” he added. Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, sought to reassure the Kingdom’s older generation of athletes that they will be welcome to attend both opening and closing ceremonies and hoped they could play a pivotal role in proceedings.
