Where to go for a week

Featured Replies

I would like to do a 7 or so day tour of one of the neighbouring countries to Thailand on my next visit to Thailand. I will do it with my Thai missus so I am looking for suggestions. Cambo? Lao? Burma?. We will fly in and I am open to either renting a car or taking a guided tour. Usually I am an independent traveler but I have had some good experiences with either private tours or small group tours.

Regards,

Steve

Take her to Siam reap to see Angkor Wat.

Siam Reap is pretty amazing. As is Bagan. IMHO, the rest of these three countries are just ok. Why not Vietnam?

Thanks for the replies. I have been to Vietnam a couple of times as I have a mate who lives in Saigon. I don't have a problem going back there as I found it to be an interesting country but I was just wondering if there might have been some alternatives.

Glad you said that. A friend of mine is coming over from the UK in a couple of weeks and we are planning a few days in Siem Reap.

2 full days is a must for SR. I was there for 3 and got to see some of the more remote sights. I've heard the town is pretty interesting aldo, but I've not been in years. Time to go back again! An absolutely amazing place.

Also Hanoi, Vietnam.

Above suggestions all good. Airfare wise Saigon is cheap. District 1 and of course old quarter Hanoi.

SR is fantastic but absolute minimum is 3 days. That's just to see AW.

PP for me is ordinary but killing fields confronting and nice to chill near river area. Forget Sihnanokville. ****hole. OP didn't mention where from. USA no longer have short visa options to Vietnam. On other hand some get 15 day visa exempt. UK just one example of many

Or, fly Bkk to Hanoi,

then, bus / overnight boat down to Halong Bay,

then, bus down to Danang,

then, fly to  Ho Chi Monh City,

then bus to Phnom Penh

then fly to Bkk.

Myanmar, hands down...

Beautiful country, friendly people, unspoiled natural and historical attractions.

I did 8 days on motorcycle with my wife and few pals, unforgettable adventure vacation.

With your own transport, yes, as public transport sucks . And the drivers are crazy.  The road out of Yangoon isn't called the death highway for nothing.

Lots of problems there right now.

Yes Vietnam is a good choice. Anywhere except Ho Chi Minh City. Danang and Hoi An and nearby Hue are good choices. And so cheap.

Vietnam. I enjoyed it so much I went twice. I flew into Saigon (HCMC) but if you want the beach

you can fly direct into Da Nang or Nha Trang from Bangkok. Vietnam is beautiful and cheap.

Lots of options for getting around. Train, bus, domestic flights. All inexpensive.

Yes, I recently watched the 3 'Top Gear' idiots ride little bikes up the coast road. Looks like a nice adventure... by car.

Siem Rep needs  at least 4 days,Angkor is amazing!!

Yep Burma( i love it there, been 5 times in last 2 years and heading back next monday)  is great but what he left out is to do that tour cost and arm and and a leg  LOL

IF she has never been out of Thailand "SINGAPORE"  although 3-4 days is plenty, she will absolutely  love it there.

why take her to another 3rd world country where she will hate it and the food.

My wife just visited her 65th country. I asked her which country would she rather visit.  Burma, Laos or Cambodia.  She said none. Too much like Thailand. She's never been to any of them.

She loves Singapore and Hong Kong. Nearby countries?  No way.

Thanks for all the input. My missus has seen a few countries and last year we went to Sri Lanka. I enjoyed the experience but it is not a place I would say to put on top of your list. A lot of the villages looked like Thai villages and, to be honest, I got sick of the fact that everyone had their hand out. At first I was thinking of going to India but thought I might try something closer. As I said before, I have been to Vietnam a few times and it is a good look but Burma sounds interesting and is a short flight from Bangers. An E-visa is pretty straightforward for me and my wife can go for 14 days with no hassle on a Thai passport. I am travelling on an Australian passport.

Steve.

For a Thai Wife South Korea is different in the Snow early new year. Good value package deals from Swampy .Need Ski Type clothes n boots though.I just sat in the Bar mainly to cold out.[emoji961]☃️
