China police official to head Interpol amid graft crackdown

BEIJING (AP) — A top Chinese police official has been elected head of Interpol as Beijing pushes for former officials and other corruption suspects to be returned from abroad.

The official Xinhua News Agency reports Vice Public Security Minister Meng Hongwei was named as the first Chinese national to hold the post at the organization's general assembly on the Indonesian island of Bali on Thursday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has led a more-than-four-year-long campaign against corruption and China filed a list of 100 of its most-wanted suspects with Interpol in April 2014. The drive is led by the Communist Party's internal watchdog body, prompting questions about its transparency and fairness.

Meng will take over from Mireille Ballestrazzi of France for a four-year term. China joined Interpol in 1984.

More on this list which numbers 400 suspects. It includes family members of suspects who have traditionally been considered part of a crime syndicate.

All of the 100 are suspected of economic crimes. Considering that national economic data is a state secret in China, Chinese authorities might find it difficult to prove to nations harboring suspects that suspects should be extradited. Remember that Interpol has no law enforcement authority to apprehend and detain suspects.

Yes its called running your enemies to ground and giving them the coup de gras. In China well it could be called internal cleansing but we all know what he is really trying to accomplish and look good doing all in one foul swoop. It also throws the fear of God? into your underlings and brings them back to toeing the line. Some of them have gotten uppity taken freedom to hear rather than the musings of Mr. Xi. He is also solidifying his role of what commander for life much like his neighbor North Korea. Power in the extreme tends to make one think they are immortal. Chinese to head Interpol? really? better rethink this one.
