PHUKET: Phuket officials have confirmed that the planned U-turn flyover project on the 402 Makprok-Phuket route must proceed, if cancelled legal action could be taken because contracts have already been signed.

The announcement came following a closed-door meeting held by Vice Governor Snith Sriwihok and Phuket Highways Office Director Patiwetwoottisak Sookki on Thursday (Nov 10) at the Phuket Highways Office to discuss land transportation development on the island including the U-turn flyover project to be built on the 402 route.

Following the meeting, V/Gov Snith, who over presided the meeting, revealed that Phuket had already started the U-turn flyover project after the Department of Highways signed the construction contract on August 9.

However, since then a number of residents have opposed the project and sent letters of complaint to the Ombudsman Office stating that the project was not appropriate.

“Phuket Highways Office received order from the Ombudsman’s Office to reexamine the U-turn flyover project planned for route 402 and were instructed to make a decision on how to proceed with the project,” V/Gov Snith said.

Infrastructure in Phuket is diabolical. The only way to sort this out is a huge investment program, which would include compulsory land purchase to expand the highways, and to include flyovers in strategic areas. This would also mean that overhead cables would have to buried to allow this to happen. Failure to do this will result in the whole Island becoming one great big traffic jam.
