63 billion baht worth of rice and tapioca deals expected from match-making event

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Commerce is holding a trade match-making event from Sunday until Wednesday during which Thai exporters of rice and tapioca can meet with their potential buyers from abroad to discuss trade deals.

Commerce Minister Apiradee Tantraporn said Monday that about 300 potential buyers from abroad are attending the event. 73 Thai rice exporting companies and 39 tapioca exporting firms have participated, she added.

The minister expected that, at the end of the event, US$ 1.8 billion or 63 billion baht worth of deals of the two farm produce would be inked between the two sides – including $806 million worth of rice deals and $1,005 million worth of tapioca deals.

The deal makings will result in the increase of deliveries of rice and tapioca for the months of November and December, said the minister, adding that she is optimistic that the 9.5 million tonnes of rice export target will be achieved.

She disclosed that five MoUs have already been inked – one for 10,000 tonnes of Hom Mali rice between Siam Diamond Export Rice Company and OEC International Holding of Hong Kong; 600 tonnes of Riceberry rice between Riceland Food and Dah Chong Hong of Hong Kong and 800,000 tonnes of tapioca deal between PR Intertrade and Fu Lai Chun Group of China.

Looks like they are still dreaming :post-4641-1156694572:

Living in Thailand is often like living in a field of dreams. But instead of "if you build it, they will come" it's "if you say it, it will happen ('til it doesn't & people forget)"

Next fairy tale, please.

It looks like the next matchmaking website after Thai Cupid.com will be Thai Rice Love Links.com.

Rest assured there will be just as many mismatches on that site which end in financial disaster for one or the other parties.

Should be done earlier but still deserve credit. Low price is an issue though. Global soft commodity prices and likely to persist for a while.

From all the horror stories I have heard I would want to closely inspect the product for sale not when it reaches my shores. You could be getting sliced diced and riced.

I used to be the European Financial Controller for a major International company, responsible for the budgets of many subsidiaries but I can honestly say that I never possessed the amazing forecasting ability of this lady, with apparently very few facts to go on.  Perhaps she went to the same school as the TAT lady?

It's pretty simple, if you don't bring positiv news you won't get hired...Everything is fine in Thailand and business is booming! No need to change anything.

Optimism dear boy optimism. Did you ever read the business section of the local newspaper. It is so full of optimism its creepy. Even when something seems to be down they claim that in a few months or a year it will be way up again. The government exudes the stuff. A good example is page 3 in the newspaper whose name we are not allowed to mention. Here is a message to Thai citizens living in the US. Thai's should avoid breaking the law (thats a given anywhere) and become more productive (a verbal pat on the head) The Foreign Ministry states. mindful of President elect Trumps tough policy against illegal immigrants unquote. How profound. This even goes Mr. Xi one better.

Co-ops are what these farmers need to be thinking, and maybe then they really can do away with greedy millers. It's a hard sell though, by brother in law has been trying to get the farmers around Phrae to do same, he even bought a milling machine, but there is a strong resentment of change. Maybe now is the time.
