Budweiser Branching Out in Cambodia

Featured Replies

Food and beverage distributor Attwood Import Export is looking to expand the distribution of its premium lager Budweiser after seeing healthy growth in the sector. After signing a deal to be the exclusive distributor for the American beer in September, the company now wants to expand its reach in Cambodia after seeing that middle class Cambodians tend to prefer premium products like Budweiser, Attwood CEO Tan Ser Chhay said.

“We want to expand our business in importing beer and alcohol in the market despite knowing that beers produced domestically are much popular across the country,” he said. “The consumption of beer in Cambodia is growing, everyone wants it. While competitors coming into the industry is bad, it is good for the economy and Cambodia is also growing.”

Referencing his study in Cambodia, Mr. Tan added that premium beer now holds a 30 percent market share in Cambodia, while the remaining 70 percent goes to local beers. According to local media reports, Attwood signed a deal with global beverage giant Anheuser-Busch in September to be the sole distributor of the American lager. This was the second such deal the company has made with Anheuser-Busch, which controls a 25 percent share of the global beer market, the first being in 2015 when Attwood secured a deal to be the exclusive distributor for Corona beer.
