CDC tones down penalties for selling or buying political or bureaucratic posts

BANGKOK: -- The Constitution Drafting Committee has agreed to tone down the penalties for politicians and bureaucrats who sell or buy political or bureaucratic posts.

CDC chairman Meechai Ruchupan said Thursday that the CDC had toned down the provisions in the political party bill regarding the selling or buying of posts in political and bureaucratic circles.

The original version of the bill which advocates death penalty for the culprits found guilty of dealing in selling or buying of official posts has come under criticism especially by politicians for being too harsh against them.

Mr Meechai said that, under the amended version, Section 149 of the Criminal Code will be applied for cases in which politicians are accused of buying or selling positions in government service and in political circle.

But for bureaucrats accused of buying or selling posts in government service, the amended version entails three levels of punishment in accordance with the severity of the alleged offence: 5-10 years imprisonment; life imprisonment and death penalty.

Isn't that all encompassing Bt500 fine sufficiently severe?

So, in response, the shrivelled up little weasel now tells us that, "...under the amended version, Section 149 of the Criminal Code will be applied..."

And, what does Section 149 say ???

Whoever, being an official, member of the State legislative Assembly, member of the Changwat Assembly or member of the Municipal Assembly, wrongfully demands, accepts or agrees to accept for himself or the other person a property or any other benefit for exercising or not exercising any of his functions, whether such exercise or non-exercise of his functions is wrongful or not, shall be punished with imprisonment of five to twenty years or imprisonment for life, and fined of two thousand to forty thousand Baht, or death !!!

That's really toning down the penalty Meechai.

And buying rank ?

Well even to be a teacher costs some cash, what about start weeding out that corruption?

Somebody show up with receipts from CDC members?

Not harsh at all. Do not break the law and you will be ok. They basically admitted they are guilty by saying so.

especially by politicians for being too harsh against them.

LOL

No problem. Can be bought from the same shop as the parachute wings, medals and other military regalia. At the rear of the shop there is a private room where the purchase of political and senior bureaucratic positions can be negotiated with the seller (by appointment only and entry via the back lane).

And because they were not given the death penalty before they won't give it this time

The death penalty should be abolished.

Everything like this gets a little too close to home and no one with any authority is keen to approve, pass such legislation although heavy penalties can be useful to have to deal with troublesome opponents.

The elite, VIPs, politicians, the military etc don't hammer each other in case one day they need the favour returned.

Showing true humility. How gracious. I guess the death sentence is off the table.

IMHO the death penalty should be retained and carried out under certain circumstances.

Child murders

Causing multiple deaths by driving

Terrorism

It would worry the life out of me,if,i thought that someone could buy a position in government of which he knew absolutely f### all about.Like, eeerrm ,lets see, like prime minister for example.:shock1:
