Luxury Wood Seized From Military Truck

A military truck transporting illegally logged luxury wood was stopped by authorities in Battambang province on Wednesday, according to police yesterday. Im Dara, the deputy commander of the provincial military police, told Khmer Times that his officers were part of the raid, but declined to comment further, only saying that military police were still unaware of the amount of timber seized. 
 

“We were just part of the raid. A number of cubic meters of the luxury-grade wood was transferred to the forestry administration’s Battambang cantonment for further investigation and possible legal action,” Mr. Dara said. According to local media, joint authorities arrested two soldiers in the raid and found 98 small pieces of luxury-grade Thnong wood, which was transferred to the provincial forestry administration cantonment. 
 

In January, Prime Minister Hun Sen created the National Anti-Deforestation Committee (NADC) to address claims of widespread deforestation in the country’s northern provinces. In June, less than five months after its creation, Environment Minister Say Samal claimed the Kingdom had put an end to illegal logging and timber exports to Vietnam, thanks to the NADC.
