Flights to Chiang Mai

My son's about to jump on Cathay Pacific, Vancouver to Chiang Mai with 8-hours stopover coming, but only 1-hour-20-minutes on the return-flight  ...  an excellent airline but not cheap.

Korean are also good, but a long-wait in ICN, on the return. Only one nightly flight in/out of CNX with them.

I've also flown on ANA via BKK, and got a reasonable price in-the-sales.

Flights via China tend to be cheapest, but may involve long/very-long connection, and always a good idea to check www.airlinequality.com for recent reports of service/ease-of-connection.

Can you be a bit more specific?

For both USA and Canada it's makes a big difference whether you start close to the west (Pacific route) or to the east (Atlantic route via Europe or Arabia).

Los Angeles or New York?

Vancouver or Montreal/Ottawa?

Options from the west have been well described in post #2 by @Ricardo .

And if "best" does not take prices into account then Los Angeles - Seoul - Chiang Mai with Korean Air can hardly be beaten.

Chiang Mai as well as Bangkok have no direct/non-stop connections to North America.

So a 1-stop connection is "best" in this sense.

And 2-stop connections goes down to "best flight to Bangkok".

A question you can fill books with.

Domestic flights from Bangkok are numerous.

I will fly from Bogotá and I am open to both routes. I would eventually make 2 stop over in 1 or 2 of the 3 cities: Hongkong, Manila or Seul for about 3 -5 days each.  Any additional suggestions?

Bogota!

That's a different story.

Almost a round the world trip.

18000 km (11000 miles) on the great circle (shortest path).

And the shorter route is eastward via Europe.

Let's reduce this to Bogota - Bangkok (still about a 30h trip).

Any additional suggestions?

You can go via London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA) or Paris (CDG).

Lufthansa and Air France are the two carriers which operate both legs (single booking with one carrier) and likely transit without immigration procedure.

Most decent to my opinion is Lufthansa via FRA.

Good arrival/departure time from Bangkok to connect to Chiang Mai.

Seoul:

If you don't shy away from the longer route westward and US immigration procedure then Los Angeles (LAX) would be your first stop and then see above (Korean Air) or the other connections to Bangkok.
