The Phnom Penh Municipal Court finally handed down its verdict in the long-running case of a wanted British businessman and five Cambodian nationals involved in forgery and land clearing yesterday, giving three- to nine-year sentences to everyone involved. The case has been bogged down in the courts for 38 months and revolves around a fraudulent 2010 land purchase and subsequent illegal land clearing of 770,000 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province by International Green Energy (IGE), a company owned by 47-year-old British national Gregg Fryett.

Presiding Judge Chuon Soreasey said the court sentenced Mr. Fryett to eight years in prison and levied a 10 million riel (about $2,500) fine against him. The 50-year-old Cambodian-American director of IGE, Um Sam Ang, was sentenced to seven years in prison and was also given a 10 million riel fine.

Soeum Denny, the 46-year-old Cambodian-American general manager of IGE, and Ouk Keo Rattanak, the 58-year-old chief of administration for the Banteay Meanchey provincial hall, were given five-year sentences and five million riel (about $1,250) fines. The court gave lawyer Ty Pov a three-year suspended sentence and a 10 million riel fine, while Major General Hanh Chamrong, a 57-year-old military officer in Prime Minister Hun Sen’s bodyguard unit, received a nine-year sentence and a 10 million riel fine. Maj. Gen. Chamrong is now at large and the court issued another warrant for his arrest.
