At least eight houses on a riverbank in Kandal province’s Krong Ta Khmau district sunk about one meter after a landslide yesterday morning, local police said. Deum Mean commune police chief Seng Vuthy said the land subsidence, which caused the soil from underneath the homes to drift into the nearby river, had caused the houses to sink.

“There were eight houses. The houses that were on the riverbank sunk slightly. It is because of the landslide,” he said. He added that it had been raining and slightly windy before the incident, but noted that the weather did not cause the landslide.

“At the time, there was also some rain and wind but because the houses were on the water they were prone to collapsing. However, there were no such cases before. There were no injuries or deaths either,” he said. After the incident, local authorities helped affected families reconstruct their homes.
