A $24 million proposal to build the first large-scale marine fish farm in Cambodia has been submitted by Norwegian company Vitamar to the council of development for Cambodia, Cambodia Daily reported.

The firm aims create a coastal base and egg-hatching site in the Cambodian Preah Sihanouk province over the next eight years.

The firm would farm seabass, grouper and other dinner species to meet growing demand for fish from tourists in Cambodia, especially as natural fish stocks declined.

It would train 200 locals in aquaculture and fish farming.

The council will consult with local Sihanoukville authorities on whether the farm would affect local fisheries or the marine environment before giving green light to the project, the director of aquaculture at the Cambodian agriculture ministry, Hav Viseth, said.

Vitamar declined to confirm its investment in the project.
