Bribery in the public sector, judiciary and police force are the most common complaints

Extortion and bribery in the public sector, judiciary and police force were some of the most common complaints received by Transparency International Cambodia’s (TI Cambodia) Advocacy and Legal Advice Center, it revealed in a study yesterday. A culmination of three years’ worth of data collection, the anti-corruption organization’s report found that 32 percent of its 601 complaints were about corruption.
 

Of that, 41 percent were about extortion and 38 percent involved bribery. The sectors most commonly identified as participating in these forms of graft were the public sector and the public service fee sector, both at 16 per cent.
 

TI Cambodia’s executive director Preap Kol differentiated the public sector complaints as involving “general corruption,” while the public service fee sectors which involved the public paying government officials to obtain services or documents. This was followed by the judiciary and the police at 14 percent and 12 percent respectively.
