Thai graft buster assures UK graft buster Thailand never enforces capital punishment for corrupt officials

The UK-based Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has voiced concern over the death sentence for state official convicted of  serious corruption charge in Thailand although it is ready to cooperate with Thai authorities in the investigation of the Rolls Royce bribery scandal.

The concern was voiced as Thai and UK anti corruption officials met at remote video conference yesterday evening.

Secretary-general of the National Anti Corruption Commission (NACC) Sansern Poljiak disclosed after the video conference that the UK anti corruption officials have voiced concerns over a number of Thai government agencies seeking for details of the alleged briberies paid by Rolls Royce to Thai authorities and politicians.

As such, he said that the NACC is preparing documents to reassure the SFO that it is  the lead department in charge of handling investigation in the case.

I hope the UK call their bluff and actually openly volunteer the names sending the NACC into a tail spin. I presume they already are aware of some names which is why they seem to be trying to bury it.

All this could change in the future after the election depending on your political leanings.

I call on the UK SFO to release the names of all those implcated in this...let it out...what's is stopping you?

The NACC could also have added that in this particular case the SFO should not be worried at all, because most of the names they will give will not be disclosed by the NACC.

Because Thailand bever enforces any laws. Everyone just runs amok.

Any confusion in regard to which Thai agency is looking into this matter is less then surprising.

It's par for the course, a couple of examples:

- The numerous Thai gov't based / funded media agencies.

- Education, so many agencies, most not even sure of their absolute roles, the items they must attend to and their boundaries.

End result, some thing not attended to because one agency thinks it's the responsibility of another agency, and duplication.

Someone please tell the  SFO that high officials not only don't face the death penalty,

but never seem to face any charges at all, over corruption, they just get away Scot free,

thats why there is so much corruption here.

It's all in the last few paragraphs of the article:

Death penalty - UK agencies don't usually provide info without assurances that there will be no death penalty.

Article 44 - Likely concerns that this will be used instead of normal legal process.

Confidentiality -

Ongoing SFO investigation could be compromised.

'... Thailand never enforces capital punishment for corrupt officials.' Thailand rarely enforces the law, full stop.

The question that needs to be answered: If you're not going to introduce the death penalty why are you discussing it then , you speak with fork tongue.

Look at the source of this news :

Yet again, we have a Thai government official speaking on behalf of a foreign government agency. It usually turns out to be untrue.

Until we have a statement from the SFO, this can be consigned to the "excuse for doing nothing" bin.

Interesting that a number of government agencies are making inquiries as to exactly what the UK Serious Fraud Office knows!

Maybe a number of government agencies are keen to ensure that they have the right cover story / rebuttal statement ready?

And don't worry about the death penalty, although maybe they should watch out for "sudden blood disorders" or suicide by hanging oneself with ones socks should the individuals they accuse know too much.

A UK civil servant with a wicked sense of humour  might prepare a list - and mix it up with a list of senior military officers past and present.

Unless you are Burmese of course.

I really do wonder if the UK or any other country except the usual suspects believes anything that comes out of a Thai officials mouth

I sincerely hope not

This case is dead before it even started. Enquiries of this nature always tend to lead to a dead-end, as we have witnessed so many times before.

I smell smoke.....as in smoke screens going up

Don't know about that, they just transfered a young aussie tourist to death row for a few pills found in the room of the bargirl he picked up. She was never charged.

Can you post the link for that story, I can't find it here?

Wow! There's a very explicit article in the BP about Ghislaine issue and others.

It is more nonsensical double talk from Thailand's senior management.  If the laws are not enforced, then why have them ?

Mexico will not hand over suspects to US law enforcement without an agreement that that person will not face capital punishment for the offense accused of or any other offense.   Japanese would not hand over suspects accused of staging an orgy in China some years ago.

It appears that they issue ''stay out of jail'' cards along with insurance documents for the majority of civil servants and family, of course. These appear to be honored by police, courts, any investigative group, etc. The appeal/delay card that seems included in the packet works via atm system, while the ''skip the country'' is accepted by most travel agents. The death penalty recently mentioned appeared to be made just to see if any one was listening.
