Forget any bad hype – Bangkok and Pattaya remain top tourist destinations

The image of top tourist destinations in Thailand like Bangkok and Pattaya often take a knocking. The cliché crew are oftentimes out in force to knock the two cities that make up the great majority of visits for travelers both internal and international. Even Chiang Mai comes in for a taste of the bashing.

Bangkok is criticized for being noisy, hard to get around and just plain confusing. Pattaya is condemned as sleaze city where the chance of a lady boy attack is more than likely. While Chiang Mai is laced with smog half the year and not the gentle quiet place it used to be.

What a load of utter nonsense.

Bangkok remains one of the world’s top destinations for travelers for very good reasons, not just because it is the gateway to the country but because it remains one of the most vibrant and interesting cities on earth that has everything for budget travelers to the most discerning of visitors.

Its hotels and tourist attractions are legendary and it is easier than ever to get around thanks to an ever improving transport infrastructure.

Bangkok is a city that doesn’t really have a center – there is just so much of interest everywhere that it is impossible to say. While many tourists choose to stay in the hotels of Sukhumvit Road there are dozens of other areas. And for the budget minded it is not just Khao San road – there is plenty of choice catering for visitors in the 500 to 1,200 baht a night budget range.

Whether it is history, Thai culture, Thai street food or international cuisine, or shopping that grabs your fancy then Bangkok has it all. Far from being a place of transit it is worth staying awhile to breathe in the atmosphere of one of the most vibrant cities on earth – a city where people live in huge numbers even in the inner areas that adds to its flavor.

Top in history are the capitals famous palaces and temples that are dotted throughout the city. The Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), Wat Pho, Wat Arun (the temple of the dawn) remain must see attractions for any visitor. A leisurely cruise down the Chao Praya river (the river of kings) is the best way to accomplish this. Why not try the public ferries that for just a few baht can take you easily to your destination.

You only have to read the Pattaya section on here to get a flavor of the place, no thanks

No, that gives you a flavor of TVF posters. Ugh. But there's their virtual Pattaya and then there's the real Pattaya, best experienced without preconceptions except for the caution duly exercised in any Third World tourist resort. Come on down. Massage?
