Prayut to study media laws of democratic countries
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said Monday that he will study media laws of democratic nations to see how they have controlled the media’s quality.

Prayut said he wanted to have a new law to control the media because the media organizations could not control and rule their members to prevent distortion of information.

How interesting. I would love to know which countries media laws he is studying, democratic ones at that. With the big one of lese majeste,  I think that it wouldn't take long to get through the studying of democratic countries.

I found this statement ironic.

'organizations could not control and rule their members to prevent distortion of information'.

Generally the opposite to here.

See @potus tweets and the replies which are not likely to happen here in the forseeable future.

You know, countries whose name starts with "Democratic Republic of" or "People's Republic of"!

Oh yeah, really? One can only speculate which democratic countries that will be. But the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo spring to mind, both renowned for their extraordinary skills at "controlling media quality". So he better choose wisely, because otherwise he'll be shocked about the level of media freedom some truly democratic countries enjoy.

Study media laws?  How about studying what a constitution is and how countries put systems in place bound to uphold the constitution.  Granted some countries arguably do it better or worse than others, but taking over a country by force and tossing out constitutions as Thailand has done many many times means a constitution is meaningless

Here are some Democratic countries......Democratic Republic of Congo and few hours drive away....Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic also North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea,

Democracy obviously means something completely different in other languages ? as does Freedom of Press and Free Speech and Freedom of expression......semantics I  guess ?

The Old Russian Constitution reads marvelously too.  Rarely seen the common people benefit from though.

Another one of those "shortest Thai courses" ever; along with the one-line syllabus.

Give yourself an "A", you deserve it.

are you sure he meant 'democratic countries'?  ones without democracy should fit the bill better?

He will not have to read very far in the US Constitution:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

and the second amendment giving the people the power to defend the constitution from the government.

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

His comment ".....prevent distortion of information" is a distortion of information in itself.

Prayuthought creates Prayutalk.

He will take all the most repressive legislation he can find from Democratic countries, combine it together, add some "Thainess" to close any loopholes, and declare Thailand to be possessed of media laws comparable to those countries.

It's not a new thing:

"Doin' it since 1932"

The reasoning of Prayut - "...if any country has it, we will "consider" whether we should have it..." !!!

As the memory of Thailand's lost democracy continues to fade, it looks like yet another of its pillars is set to tumble and the country sink ever further into the mire of autocracy.

For this

Quote

media organizations could not control and rule their members to prevent distortion of information.

Read this

media organizations could not control and rule their members to ensure they write what he wants them to write.

Maybe it's lost in translation, but someone should tell this 'bright one' that it is illogical that the word/phrase 'democracy' and 'controlling the media' be used in the same sentence, and in the same context.

Prayuth a foreign law student?

Better to study angkrit first

Prayut to study media laws - first study how Thai law is administered.  He will find that the guilty all earn less than 10,000 a month whilst the innocent (of murder/drug trafficking/killing cripples/etc)  all earn over 100K per month or have a father in the police force.

The expected criticism after outlining his version of Thai style democratic media regulations will probably be brushed aside and blamed on bad google translation during his studies of democratic countries.

With the LM- laws and the libel laws in place, it really doesn't matter, what laws he "studies"!

And, heaven forbid, we can't have that, can we?

Yes using the word control gives away his intent. Window dressing and peeing into the wind.

Does Russia have a constitution or is it called "The World According To Putin" or is it Garp no its Putin.

He's in for a very rude awakening...!

Most of the countries I know of, don't CONTROL the media....Hence the word, DEMOCRATIC...!
