BANGKOK: -- The government will hold a formal inauguration of the royal appointment of the supreme patriarch at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on Sunday.

According to Prime Minister’s Office Minister Omsin Cheewapruek, who is responsible for regulating the National Office of Buddhism, he will hand over a formal letter inviting the abbot of Wat Ratchabophit on Friday to accept the royal appointment at the inauguration ceremony at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on Sunday.

The abbot, Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong, was appointed by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn to be the 20th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

After Sunday’s ceremony, public members will be allowed to pay respects to the newly-appointed supreme patriarch from February 13 onwards.

Meanwhile Phra Phrommunee, assistant to the abbot, said that Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong did not stay at the temple right now.
